Anatomy of a Premiere — Part Two: Pick Them, Pick Them!

Finding the right cast for a play is a crucial part of the production. Wise people have often noted that about 80% of a Director’s job is choosing the proper cast. Other wise people put it around 90%. With community theatre that task sometimes becomes a little more challenging. Often there is a smaller talent pool from which to choose. Sometimes you only have enough auditioners to fill the available roles. In those cases, the Director’s job is to ensure that the limited options provided by fate turn out to be the right cast after all.

The optimum scenario for auditions, from a Director’s standpoint, is to have a reasonable turnout that provides options, but enough stand-out talent that with an experienced eye you can see the right cast assemble itself from the group.

This is Craig. Everyone say, “Hi, Craig.” Craig has an experienced eye. (I think it’s the left one. Look close; it seems to glow with wisdom.)

Craig - auditions

Craig has a lot of experience with choosing the right cast. He’s quite good at it. Last week, over two nights of auditions for the Opera House Players premiere of “The Accidental Hit-Man Blues” he saw the perfect cast. In fact, he saw three or four different perfect casts. Seems they had a huge turn out. Look at the expression on his face. That’s his “I have to choose from multiple versions of awesome” face.

And so Craig broke with years of tradition and had call-backs this week. After much gnashing of teeth and wringing of hands, Craig settle on the right right cast.

And that cast is…

Laura………………….Cheri Moser

Ron………………………Jon Banse

Hit-Man…………………Cary Kann

Mully…………Edward Hayes-Hall

Sculder…………..Sarah Ronnevik

Johnny……………………Clark Ott

Mrs. Frobisher……Michele Smith

Sammy……………….Eric Layden

I am quite pleased with that list. I know 75% of the cast personally and I am impressed with the level of talent involved. I’m excited to see them bring my script to life.

The countdown continues. Ten weeks to go.

Next: Iowa? Really?

  1. […] I’ve also mentioned previously how I was confident with the casting choices Director Craig Strutt had made. I now know that my confidence was not misplaced at all. […]
